Aman at Summer Palace

It’s Good to be the King

One of the things hotel companies are realising about jetsetters like us, is that, from time to time, we like to live like the nobility. From castles atop Scottish crags and Indian palaces in the deserts of Rajasthan, to barges which once carried Thailand’s Kings down Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River, travellers looking to bunk down in regal style have more choice than ever.

Beijing’s 44-room Aman at Summer Palace is just such a place. Built from a series of dwellings on the palace’s fringe, which housed visitors seeking an audience with the Emperor, the urban resort is a kaleidoscope of old and new China. Located adjacent to the palace’s East Gate, the architecture is styled on the Ming dynasty, with floors made from polished Jin clay. Rooms are elegant, if not a little retro, and the location is a little distant from the city's other attractions, but from the Imperial Suite, with its spacious living space, spa treatment room and leafy courtyard, you can shake yourself a rice wine martini, declare temporary independence from the world beyond, and become the master of your own domain.

Your own city where nothing is forbidden.
