Only You Hotel Atocha Madness in Madrid

[16/01/17]

Once in a generation, a hotel comes along that helps define a city; that puts a destination on (or sometimes back on) the map for trend-driven travellers looking for the sharpest point of the cutting edge.

In Spain that kind of action usually takes place in Barcelona, where the sexy vibe of the Mediterranean meets the laid-back charm of Catalonia. However, if you’re looking for an excuse (other than the recent launch of direct Cathay flights) to visit Madrid, one new house of slumber is about to bring the cool back to the Spanish heartland.

With a vibe that smacks of the Big Apple, Only You Hotel Atocha opens this month adjacent to Madrid’s Atocha railway station. Overlooking uber-cool Paseo Infanta Isabel and Alfonso XII streets, this chic new 205-room urban hideaway bears the hallmarks of prestigious Barcelona-based interior designer Lázaro Rosa Violán, who has created a welcoming, warm and sophisticated space that blends industrial and Mediterranean styles and materials. Escape Hong Kong’s winter and book yourself into the Terrace Suite, which comes with a separate living room and fully-furnished solarium terrace, in time for the hotel’s four month-long New York-esque pop up series, which includes a Seagram’s gin bar; a jazz residency from renowned US label Blue Note; a barbershop reminiscent of Manhattan’s Frank's Chop Shop; and gastronomy from Michelin-starred chef Bryce Shuman.

What a capital idea.
