Xiang Xiang Pray House Luxe Chinese Hotel Made From Shipping Containers

[04/09/12]

Tucked away in a little Chinese village on the outskirts of Changzhi city in Shanxi Province you’ll find a luxury hotel like no other. The basic building blocks are shipping containers. That’s right, shipping containers. They’ve plonked 35 of them (brand new ones no less) into the middle of the Chinese countryside. The villagers must have thought Chinese officials were playing Sim City with their lives again.

It’s truly bizarre but it’s also pretty cool. The outside of the containers gives nothing away about their interiors which are top draw. The hotel comprises 21 guest rooms which come in two different sizes with a few windows on the roof and walls to make sure you don’t feel like you’re sleeping in an enlarged coffin. It’s not a place to take your girl if she suffers from psychosis (it could be the setting for a B-list Chinese Kubrick film) but it beckons for the adventurous.

The hotel was actually inspired by the containers shipped from China to Japan in the aftermath of the Japanese tsunami to house the displaced population. Other features include a patio for hosting tea ceremonies, a lobby, a restaurant and function rooms. The incense-themed retreat is fitted out to a five-star standard and took only three months to design and install. If the Chinese government ever gets twitchy - as they like to do from time to time - they can simply pick it up and drop it elsewhere. Like glamorous gypsies.

Ship shape.
