Squid Fishing in HK Early Evening Tours

[15/08/12]

Ask a Hong Konger what the city is all about and more often than not they'll talk about the sea. It goes without saying that we love junking and watersports, but one of the best things to do on the water in HK is squid fishing. There are a variety of companies offering early evening expeditions to Lamma or Junk Bay where you'll reel in squid by the bucket load. Wash off the petrol and general pollution and you've got yourself a squiddy dinner sourced from your own back yard.

Jubilee, Saffron Cruises and Traway are the big players and they have a couple of general options. You can either take a whole boat with a capacity of roughly 30 people (HK$4,800 - 6,000, Traway is the cheapest), or if your numbers are small, you can join another group's expedition. As an individual you'll pay roughly HK$175, get picked up from Central or Sai Kung and poodle around for four hours dangling your bits over board. So to speak.

The boats are fitted with floodlights which glare down on the prey (if that's not a give away they deserve to be caught) while anglers use rudimentary plastic lines with multi-pronged hooks to snatch the squid. As an added bonus Jubilee and Traway serve supper on board, consisting of hearty Chinese fare such as fried rice, chow mein and chicken wings. Word of advice though - have a bite before you get your hands dirty or the poultry will taste like creatures of the deep.

Here little fishy, fishy.
