ECOLS

[02/07/09]

Thanks to Al Gore's stirring lecture in "An Inconvenient Truth", the world has finally woken up to Earth’s most pressing plight – global warming. So you better green up, if you want to avoid choking to death in Hong Kong’s haze of pollution (cough).

Make a start at ECOLS (which stands for Eco Lifestyle), a green-friendly store that sells eco-designer home furniture, accessories, lighting and stationery. You’ll not only find energy-saving LED lamps, but also innovative items, such as designer shelves and tables made out of recycled wood from demolished buildings, and flattened Coca Cola bottles that hold your bits and bobs. Particularly eye-catching is the hand-woven designer Codha chair (HK$16,500) that’s completely made out of recycled plastic. Most items might burn a hole in your wallet, but you can’t really put a price on saving the environment now, can you? Each item also has an ECOLS rating, i.e. how eco-friendly they are based on their material, manufacturing process, creativity and stylishness. And ECOLS is more than just a store; it’s also an art space for creative designers to showcase their eco products.

How ‘green’ are you now?
