Throughout history, society has gone to considerable lengths to define where each of us stands from a socio-economic perspective. First it was easy; you were either clean or dirty, aptly summed up in Monty Python's search for The Holy Grail by one unfortunate peasant; “He must be a noble, he's the only one not covered in s**t.” As the rabble become more knowledgeable however, other barriers were presented to keep “us” from “them”, including elitist clubs, customary dress, and expensive, prejudicial sports, like hunting.

Such ancient institutions can now be found closer than you might expect.

At the Glenderry Country Club, in Pine Valley just outside Zhuhai, you can shoot partridges and pheasant, and even ducks on specially escorted 'drives'.

Start your day out with transfers from the ferry to the country club, a welcome drink (unfortunately not a gin and tonic) and a browse through the armory.

Then you'll practice on clay 'ducks' before heading off in a group in search of the real thing, armed with modern shot guns and experienced trackers.

Just mind the peasants.
