Breakthrough Boxing Boxing with a Conscience

[20/10/13]

We all remember watching Rocky (the original, not the money-grubbing sequels) for the first time. We felt his frustration as he worked to bring Adrian out of her shell and win her over; we cheered during his verbal spars and in-ring battle with Apollo Creed; and we still shadow box our way down Wyndham Street when Eye of the Tiger hits our Friday night Weekend Winner iPod playlist. Boxing is a sport that captures the very essence of man: it requires passion and determination; will and skill; Muhammad Ali’s ‘float like a butterfly, sting like a bee’ finesse as well as Mike Tyson’s ferocity.

Everything that boxing embodies will be on display on November 16 when the British Chamber of Commerce and Tanner De Witt present the 11th edition of its annual Breakthrough Boxing pro-am fight night. Cocktails and a three-course dinner at the Hong Kong Football Club are followed by six pro and amateur bouts in the ring. What sets this boxing event apart is its community spirit. Boxers in the blue corner have been chosen from the Hong Kong Police’s Operation Breakthrough Boxing program, a community project which uses sport to fight crime and juvenile delinquency, while the opposing red corner draws boxers from clubs in Hong Kong, Macau and Bangkok. The evening’s main fight will see Hong Kong’s Surez “The Warrior” Gurung go round for found with Bangkok’s Davul “The Hammer” Manopkanchang. From ringside, spectators will have the chance to bid on great items in the live silent auctions, which include tickets to Manny Pacquiao’s Macau fight, and a chance to train with top HK boxer Red “The Wonder Kid” Tso.

Take an uppercut for charity.

N.B. This event has been cancelled.
