In a money-driven society such as Hong Kong, where the pastime for most people is engaging in the stock market rather than a sporting activity, you can’t really blame the city’s inhabitants for not bringing home many Olympic medals. But with the big waves in our favour, we’ve shown the world that we know a thing or two about riding waves.

This summer, be inspired by our very own Olympic gold medalist, Lee Lai Shan, and pick up the popular sport of windsurfing. Train with her uncle and mentor, Lai Gun, at the Cheung Chau Windsurfing Centre – the city’s home of windsurfing for over 30 years. A beginner’s one-day, five-hour course will set you back HK$600/person (for a large group of five) or HK$800/person (for small group of 1-3 persons), while a one-on-one advanced course costs HK$350/hour. For those of you who are more nimble on a surfboard, you can attack the waves on your own and rent a sail from the centre (HK$90/hr - HK$150/hr). After you’ve mastered your technique, relax at the outdoor Seaside Café, crack open a beer, and watch the sun go down.

Life’s a beach when you can ride the waves.
