Red Bull King of the Rock HK Basketball Qualifiers to Play on Alcatraz

[05/09/11]

The ‘Red Bull King of the Rock’ basketball tournament is coming to Hong Kong with the local qualifiers scheduled for September 13. The winner will then take part in the tournament proper on Alcatraz, a.k.a The Rock - an incredible setting for a one-on-one basketball competition. The qualifier from Hong Kong will basically get to walk in the footsteps of some of America’s most notorious criminals as well as one of the most irritating actors of all time, Nicholas Cage.

This year's tournament on Alcatraz will see 64 streetball players from around the world compete to be crowned King of the Rock. Up to 32 players, meanwhile, can enter the Hong Kong qualifier in Wan Chai with each game monitored by its own ref, court manager and scoreboard. It will be an immense spectacle even without the prison surroundings and sharks infested waters. You wouldn’t want to lose your ball on Alcatraz would you.

The rules and scoring will be the same as regular hoops but four half-court games will be played simultaneously so each winner will hop to the next court as soon as they’re done. It sounds mental. The one real downer for willing participants (apart from the possibility of gross public humiliation) is you need a US visa in advance. The red tape shouldn’t stop you watching, however, and we think it will be nearly as cool as watching Sean Connery talking about prom queens.

Rock on.
