The Barber Shop

The Closest Cut of All

Finding a truly male domain is becoming increasingly difficult. Sports bars have ladies night, pool halls have all-girl competitions, even Hong Kong Gentlemen’s Cub, Central’s bloke epicentre since 1846, has been infiltrated. While we’re all about equality (it makes the staff Christmas party less of a sausage fest), men do need a place in which to lax out and embrace their Y chromosomes.

Wellington Street’s Barber Shop is just such a place. More elegant than those places your mother carted you off to, filled with pipe smoking retirees reading the Risqué Review, its wood panelling and traditional barber’s chairs says it all: this is a place where they know about football, and pub crawls, about the hilarity of stag night mishaps and the dangers of arm-swinging toddlers. Although it officially does serve the fairer sex, this place is all about the boys. Your hair is safe in the hands of true pros, who understand the origins of barbering – in ancient Rome when everyone but slaves had to be clean shaven – and the importance of looking your best when on the beat.

A place for all truly free men.
