Do you like grooving to music and kicking some butt at the same time? Then you’re going to dig Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian dance form that incorporates martial arts movements, such as cartwheels, handstands, head butts, high-flying kicks and sweeps.

Become a Capoeirista under the instruction of William Indio, who represents the Hong Kong chapter of the Axé Capoeira international academy. As a native Brazilian, he has been practicing the art form for over 15 years and offers classes to all levels (HK$700 per month for two two-hour sessions). Once you’ve got the techniques down, you’ll practice in the “roda”, an outer circle in which Capoeiristas take turns playing various percussion instruments, whilst two people inside the circle spar. This art form was originated by African slaves in 16th century Brazil as a means of disguised defense against their masters. Plans are in the pipeline to hold a week-long event at Stanley later this year with fellow masters of Capoeira from around Asia to give teaching sessions.

Put some Brazilian flair in your step. There’s a new groove in town.

The Nuts and Bolts: Dance and kick some butt, while you learn Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian dance cum martial arts form taught at Axé Capoeira.
