Ned Kelly's Last Stand Hong Kong Jazz’s Last Stand

Hong Kong likes to pride itself as being a world city. It regularly compares itself to the globe’s top capitals and rightly so – we have the shopping, the transport, the shiny malls and towering buildings, the food, wine and women.

But what this city lacks is a decent live music scene in general and jazz specifically. In a city where you never have to walk far for a Gucci hand bag or an over-priced coffee, truly great jazz can be as hard to find as a virgin in the playboy mansion.

Fortunately TST’s Ned Kelly’s Last Stand, named for the notorious Australian outlaw, offers free, nightly jazz, even if it has a strange backdrop. With a Wan Chai-esque façade that may deter all but the most avid listener, Ned Kelly’s is an Aussie bar that serves traditional pub food, washed down with pints of Guinness. But at 9.30pm, the bar’s ample band stand is populated by musical die-hards, and the effect is an authentic live music experience unmatched in Hong Kong. From Ellington to Holiday, rag time to Dixieland, it’s a refreshing change from $180 cocktails and CD-compilation DJs.

Outback meets old time improve.
