Garmin VIRB Action Cam

[08/06/15]

So we've all seen those death-defying videos filmed on pint-sized action cameras strapped to the heads of daredevils as they leap off bridges, ride mountain tracks at high speed or leap from perfectly good airplanes.

In fact, action cam technology has allowed for a whole new film genre, one that allows us to live vicariously through the eyes of those who, it seems, don't want to. But it's one thing to see the dust, sweat and speed up close – it's another to have all that intensity measured and presented alongside the footage.

Enter the new VIRB X and VIRB XE compact action cameras from Garmin. What they lack in cool names (they sound like German sex toys) they make up for with full HD eyeball-grabbing video. Waterproof to 50 metres, even without an external case, these wide-angle wonders feature built-in sensors and wireless functionality that can allow for data overlay, from g-loading during acrobatic flight to acceleration, GPS position, top speed and vertical feet dropped during those dazzling, gut-wrenching falls. The two models (one films at 1440p/30fps and 1080p/60fps and the other at 1080p/30fps and 720p/60fps) both take 12MP stills and feature image stabilisation, Bluetooth headphone and speaker connectivity, and the ability to record in super slow-mo. The XE version even has a Pro Mode that allows for more advanced manual camera adjustments, for those film makers who plan to survive their filming ordeals.

Think of it as Fear Factor with data to back it up.
