HTC Hero HTC Hero hits the shelves

[25/09/09]

The world seems dominated by two smart phones. The BlackBerry crowd are constant slaves to their offices, and suffer life-threatening thumb tendinopathy from constantly scrolling through their inbox, while the iPhone crowd have forgotten how to interact with their fellow man without Skype, Facebook, and Twitter, and have had their earphones surgically grafted to their heads. What they’ll all agree on, though, is that both devices have their inherent weaknesses, and that there’s still no one phone to rule them all.

Or is there? Taiwan’s HTC has just launched the Hero (HK$4,498), a clever concoction of all the best elements of its big-hitting competitors – two parts BlackBerry, with its central scroll ball and durability (go on, sing it “….with a strength to carry on”) and two parts iPhone, with its multimedia focus and user-friendly, touch-screen interface. But HTC have also capitalised on some ‘iBerry’ deficiencies – a special anti-smudge touch screen means your phone won’t look like a CSI crime scene, and expandable SD memory means you’re not stuck with the 16GB that seemed like enough at the time. HTC are beating the personalisation drum pretty hard, with a range of custom settings for people who apparently have too much time on their hands, but it looks like the two-phone race has a new under dog.

The iBerry Cocktail – garnished with innovation.
