Lovely Corner Hong Kong’s Favourite Curry Corner

[29/06/10]

What with all the hype of million-dollar décor restaurants, door girls armed with clipboards and dishes that could have been served on a postage stamp, it’s nice to find something a bit more homely, a bit more down to earth on the Hong Kong dining scene.

For those diners looking to follow their stomachs and not other people’s facebook statuses, there is one little corner that, like a Snickers Bar and the first cold beer of a sunny Saturday, always satisfies.

Lovely Corner is a little known Hong Kong institution that has always been popular with the city’s Nepalese crowd, and is increasingly finding favour with late night revellers looking for some good old fashioned home cooking (if home was Kathmandu).

Literally looking like someone’s living room, complete with Formica table tops, mismatched curtains and a corner-mounted television playing ancient Bollywood classics, this is a great spot in which to crash land with a thirst for Nepalese Gorkha beer and a plate of their signature momos, balls of dumpling-meets-chutney goodness.

After enough beer, your mind might even let the vivid mountain range murals on the walls lull you into thinking you’re lunching at Base Camp.

Especially if you’re under the air con.
