Oscar’s Espresso Bar Coffee Addicts Take a Perch

[18/06/10]

Hong Kong never really got the coffee bug – in fact, one of the city’s most iconic drinks is blending coffee with tea, a sacrilege that might have lead to a jolly good whipping (and not in a good way) during colonial times.

And although there is seemingly a Starbucks or Pacific Coffee Company on every corner, none of them epitomes the coffee experience many expats left behind when moving to the Fragrant Harbour.

Help is at hand; Oscar’s is a little slice of Sydney’s barista tradition, transplanted like an exotic sapling to Hong Kong’s stony soil. Featuring the whitewashed walls and dark timber settings of a typical Potts Point or Balmain java joint, Oscar’s best asset is its coffee, a custom blend that reads like a Ms Universe contest - Brazil, Ethiopia, India, El Salvador, and Guatemala. If you’re not looking for a case of the hand trembles, there are decaf blends and a range of exotic teas, including a cinnamon chai latte (which technically is a tea and about as Sydney-centric as streaking at the cricket). The menu features fresh salads, panini and pastas and they even have a coffee body scrub for true crème addicts.

A taste of downunder in every cup.
