Mezcalito Time Your Tried Tequila’s ‘Ugly Sister’

[17/04/17]

You may have already heard of the story of mezcal, the ugly sister of tequila. With a strong, quirky personality, this Mexican distilled spirit, once consumed by the blue collar, hasn’t, until recently, enjoyed the limelight and infamy of its libacious sister.

However, mezcal, long appreciated by bartenders rather than punters, is now making head way in Asia, where its spicy, bodacious characteristics lend themselves to a generation of re-imagined tequila classics.

If you’re keen to know about mezcal, Hong Kong’s recently opened Mezcalito is the place to go to. Inspired by the lounge bars of Los Angeles, Mezcalito, Spanish for ‘little mezcal’, features more than 60 types of mezcal and tequila, making its saffron-hued bar the largest supplier in town. Set your Jarabe with Mexico’s lesser-loved libation against cozy lounges backdropped against views of the cityscape. While Mexicans generally drink mezcal straight to enjoy its strong smoky flavour, here at Mezcalito, the staff suggest another great way to taste the spirit – get the palate ready by chewing a slice of orange topped with roasted Mexican salt, and sip the liquor with a kiss (don’t rush it) to feel the spice on the lips, while letting your taste buds search for its intricate flavours. School yourself with a tasting flight to truly get to know the spirit’s complexities, best matched with the bar’s regular entertainment, which includes dance performances and pop-up events.

As the saying goes: “for every ill, mezcal; and for every good as well.”
