Flint Grill & Bar Could This Be Hong Kong’s Best Burger?

[12/11/13]

Few dishes have the iconic status of the humble hamburger; its simplicity is surpassed only by the satisfaction it brings when cooked to perfection. Of course, the heritage of such an icon, a simple meat patty between two halves of a bun, has always been hotly contested, but it was at the 1904 St Louis World Fair, when the New York Times namelessly attributed the hamburger as an “innovation of a food vendor on the pike” that the simple burger got its true start. Since then variations on the theme abound; in Mexico your hamburguesas comes with avocado and jalapeño; Down Under you’ll find beetroot and a runny egg between those buns; and in Alberta, Canada, you can get a ‘kubie burger’ made with pressed Ukrainian sausage.

Now you have the Iberico Pork Burger at the newly opened Flint Grill & Bar at the JW Marriott Hong Kong, a worthy contester to the city’s best burger if ever there was one. Crafted by chef Sven Wunram with hints of both Spanish and Mexican influence, this decadent dish features an Iberico pork mince patty, topped with shredded braised Iberico pork rib, tangy parmesan cheese, roasted piquillo peppers, arugula salad and a bitey, smoky chipotle mayo. All that goodness is wedged between two halves of a seed-encrusted bun and served with apple sauce and shoestring fries. Love yourself just a little more and match this mammoth mouthful, the popularity of which has already made it a Flint day and night staple, with an Anchor Rock beer from San Francisco, Sven’s favourite drop.

Because it really is ok to love yourself.
