Chachawan Turning Up the Heat

[06/08/13]

The aphrodisiacal attributes of the humble chili have long been known to socially-savvy societies like the ancient Aztecs, whose leader Montezuma laced drinking chocolate with the powerful plant to make his heart “dance” before visits to his local harem. Chili peppers contain capsaicin, a chemical that speeds up the heart rate, induces sweating and increases nerve ending sensitivity quicker than ladies' beach volleyball highlights. In small quantities it can cause a tingling sensation in the…extremities, and the resulting heat is well known to spice things up between the sheets.

You can get your fix of fiery chili-laced dishes at Chachawan, the newest venture by Hong Kong hotelier-turned-restaurateur Yenn Wong. Located on Hollywood Road, Chachawan specializes in the gasp-inducing, face-slapping dishes of northeast Thailand, with Adam Cliff, a protégée of Thai cuisine, cooking up a storm in the open kitchen amidst industrial chic interiors. The sit-up kitchen counter is ideal for date nights; the innovative dishes – including hot and sour pork ribs, chicken thighs marinated in garlic and coriander, and lip-smacking wagyu beef salad with fish sauce and toasted rice – are great conversation starters, and Cliff will make suitable suggestions as the night progresses and the spice takes effect.

Chilies, don’t fail us now.
