bordeaux etc Opens in CWB Wine Shop Unveils 1869 Lafite

[31/01/12]

Hong Kong’s drowning in wine but a new shop has just opened in Causeway Bay, bordeaux etc, stocking an 1869 bottle of Lafite. That’s right, 1869, the year the last Māori troops surrendered in New Zealand, Britain abolished public hanging (not private), celluloid was patented and Gandhi was born. If you think it’ll taste like feral panda droppings, think again. It’s still eminently drinkable but the HK$285,990 price tag might put you off.

The shop only stocks products from Bordeaux and has plenty of other ancient numbers including a Pichon Lalande 1928 (750ML) for HK$12,750 and a Chateau Beychevelle 1928 (750ML) for HK$10,150. There are over 30,000 bottles available ranging from half bottles to 15-litre numbers with over 900 references in total. If you're looking for a birthday present for one of your best mates - and he's not one of those men who has a Britney Spears scale breakdown every birthday - they're sure to have a bottle from the year of his birth.

bordeaux etc also has an aroma experience kit which contains 80 common wine scents and the staff can take you on a short smell lesson when you’re in the shop. Alternatively, they offer official aroma classes to improve your nose, bring in wine makers to talk about their vintages, have in-house sommeliers and informative touch screen computers. A word of warning though - it’s a difficult place to find. They claim they’re on Leighton Road because it’s a big name address but the entrance is actually on Matheson St. Whose bright idea was that?

Bored of eaux?
