ToGather.Asia Crowdfunding Asian Crowdfunding Platform like Kickstarter

[18/12/12]

Kickstarter, the crowdfunding platform behind all manner of creative projects, has been a runaway success and now it's Asia's turn. In fact, ToGather.Asia is based on very similar principles as its American counterpart. Budding entrepreneurs upload their pitch, and you, the public, get to pledge your hard earned sheckles to turn it into a reality. In exchange, you'll receive whatever the project owners deem a fair trade for your dollar: a mug, a t-shirt, an album - although sadly not a big slice of equity in the 'new Facebook'.

It's based on a PayPal system so you know it's kosher, and frankly, exploring the projects can be entertaining regardless of your intentions to invest. One of the current options is a proposed mini tour of Europe by Indonesian rock band, The Trees & The Wild, made all the more awesome by their bespectacled drummer. He looks like he's been pulled out of a class photo and instantly discovered he has music skills like School or Rock.

Others include an open source 3D printer and a pop art book of quotations but the problem is the site hasn't hit the scale yet that propels so many Kickstarter ventures to reality, nor the same quality of projects. That said, if you explore and share the site you might find something incredible, and if it grows enough, then in a year's time it could be your route to funding. Sadly, not all of us can conceive of a US$100 billion dollar company from our dorm room.
