NEvent: ZEVS

ZEVS adds colour to the city’s graffiti scene

Hollywood Road has probably the highest concentration of art galleries in Hong Kong, but look closer and you’ll see ‘works of art’ that are not confined by the four walls of the city’s buildings. Rather, the concrete jungle serves as the canvas for many local graffiti and street artists.

Gracing us with his presence is ZEVS, a graffiti artist from France whose first solo exhibition opens at the Art Statements Gallery today. Known for his “Liquidated Logos”, he ‘liquidates’ big brands, such as LV, Chanel, McDonald’s and Coca Cola, by dripping paint down their logos, especially at their corporate headquarters. He recently ‘liquidated’ the Chanel logo at Hong Kong’s Central business district (pictured left). His exhibition here will feature Chinese-influenced paintings of dripping LV and Chanel logos on lacquer, as well as ceramic works and metal paintings. Considered by many to have pioneered the French street art scene in the late 90’s, he once ‘bombed’ many billboards of models with dripping red paint on their foreheads to mimic a gunshot wound in between their eyes. If this is not considered ‘art’ to you, you’ve got to at least love this guy’s sense of humour.

Get ready to be ‘liquidated’.
